CELEBRATING FORTY-FIVE YEARS OF 'MISSION: GALACTICA - THE CYLON ATTACK'!

Back in 1979, I was aware that the Battlestar Galactica saga was already a successful series in the US, but so far the British Thames/ITV channel that had purchased the one season run had had, at that time, some kind of delay in airing it, presumably because Universal/CIC were about to launch a second adventure on big screens - soon great news to this eager near ten-year old and I'm sure many many other fans like myself around the country. Mission: Galactica - The Cylon Attack was blasting its way to us, bringing us all-new action and all-new additional characters that would make an impact on the saga!

Though I'm sure I recall seeing poster promotions on selected red London buses about town, as well as the obvious Tube station publicity, plus promos in teen related magazine titles like Look-In and 2000AD on the actual release, as far as I was aware there was very little early publicity for the theatrical run - my mum and I literally found out about the movie whilst shopping in the West End and talking to someone at the Empire Leicester Square when we saw the coming soon poster outside of it. Once again, we would soon experience Galactica's second 'movie' in the seat-rumbling Sensurround experience they had there by release time, literally opening mere weeks before the return of the Star Wars saga with The Empire Strikes Back, which we'd also go on to see in the West End at the opposite Odeon Leicester Square. It was clear that Universal were trying to cash-in quick with their own sci-fi hit before Lucas's release, of which they still needed to make money back on the series enormous production costs of the time, but I didn't care, it was just great to have the mighty Battlestar and its heroes and villains back on the big screen, and would prove such a nostalgic experience!

And my thoughts on the film at the time? Well it was very enjoyable - I always liked Lloyd Bridges as the unflappable and bold Cain, was surprised by the return of John Colicos as Count Baltar, and the spectacular Cylon kamikaze attack was impressive, a sequence which I later discovered was culled from another series episode and not specifically shot for the film. The reuse of footage from the original theatrical adventure of 1978 was noticeable and irked a bit, exemplified by the Cylon Tanker sequence (albeit with new space battle action woven around it) and the Ovion minefield of Carillon, but, to compensate, there were thankfully some noticeable new effects shots added to the film from Universal Heartland that were much appreciated - I remember loving the Viper strafing run on the shocked Cylon civilians in their city (part of some great action on Gamoray, of which I also certainly liked Sheba and Cassie in their black outfits!) plus certain exciting shots in the space battles against the Cylon Raiders. I wore my Galactica poster art jacket with pride at the cinema that afternoon on school holiday!

From the debut of the legendary Commander Cain and Sheba, to the bold attack on Gamoray, enjoy our Forty-Fifth Anniversary celebrations for Mission: Galactica - The Cylon Attack!

BEHIND THE SCENES: THE ORIGINAL CYLONS

Looking more like the Ovions later seen in the pilot episode, and with origins here that see them resemble the alien humanoid race descendants referred to in often deleted dialogue during the series genesis, this early Cylon trio seen in storyboard form are piloting their raider vessel into attack, during the early events of Saga of a Star World

CLASSIC IMAGE: BY BALTAR'S COMMAND!

In his new command centre on his Cylon Basestar (designed to cut down on lengthy lighting and filming time on the previous bigger chamber set), Count Baltar receives news from the Atilla Outpost on the recent capture of a Colonial Warrior, much to the annoyance of his servant Lucifer, jealous of the Outpost's ambitious fellow IL series Cylon, Spectre. A scene from the enjoyable The Young Warriors

'GALACTICA 1980' AT 40: 'CONQUEST OF THE EARTH'!

Though my ten-year old self was disappointed that my favourite heroes in Apollo and Starbuck were not coming back to the new series of Battlestar Galactica airing on US TV in 1980, the idea of the Rag Tag fleet finally finding Earth, in Galactica 1980, still caught my interest. The Starlog magazine coverage for the new series at first seemed relatively encouraging, too. And when it was announced that a selection of episodes were being released as a theatrical compilation in Europe, as had been done with BG's Saga of a Star World and The Living Legend/ Fire in Space, my hopes and anticipation were higher spirited, especially as no indication had been given that the new series had actually been bought yet for UK screenings.

Then followed the above great art/photo composite poster, which, for the most part, actually ended up being better and more exciting to witness than the total onscreen edited mess, UK 1981 released, that was ultimately to be Conquest of the Earth!

The poster also made a terrific cover to the rare Japanese laserdisc release! With thanks to John Johnson.

CLASSIC MERCHANDISE: 'GALACTICA' RISES!

I thought I'd seen all the variant covers to the original novelisation of Saga of a Star World, but not this international one with that groovy red logo adorning it with just 'Galactica', a uniqueness which makes it more than worthy of posting.

'GALACTICA' AT 40: $14,000,000 WELL SPENT!

We've seen international variations, but here's the original American/Canadian poster release for the theatrical version of Saga of A Star World from 1978, and it's still a terrific poster too, capturing all the exciting elements of Glen A. Larson's galactic adventure, showcasing man's struggle to survive the might of the deadly Cylons.

CLASSIC MERCHANDISE: BIG G CEREAL CARDS (1978)

All-action effects scene card from the 1978 cereal set.

Another nostalgic piece of merchandise that I wish had made it further overseas beyond the US and Australia: a 16 piece set of 1978 cards/stickers for the BIG G General Mills cereals range. Information reveals at least four were create-a-scene cards, 2 or more were cards, 4 or more were stickers and the remainder being cut-outs.

Cylon and Ovion cut-out.

Starbuck and Boomer cut-out
Boxey and Muffey cut-out.
Apollo and Adama cut-out.

Cylon Raider sticker.

If anyone out there has more info or better scans that they can provide, please get in touch...

CLASSIC IMAGE: WHEN 'PEOPLE' MET 'GALACTICA'

The launch of the most ambitious sci-fi weekly TV series of the time would certainly attract the attention of the most popular news magazines of the period, particularly PEOPLE, which ran a special cover and feature on GALACTICA's eagerly anticipated launch.

GALACTICA IN COMICS: 'CYLON APOCALYPSE'

With a great story by LOST writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach that truly captures the original series characters and their inter-relationships, and packed with tons of action, the Dynamite Comics four-part mini-series Cylon Apocalypse, first released in 2007, was a terrific adventure which, if you haven't already got it in your collection, is well worth tracking down.

With some equally super art by Carlos Rafael, the story has the Galacticans and their Rag-Tag fleet caught in a Cylon civil war, and a deadly virus that seems to be killing them off. Soon, our heroes see an opportunity they can't afford not to take, delivering a massive death blow to the weakened enemy empire...
